Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis: X-rays, Photographs and Illustrations

October 5, 2022

Anyone who suffers from or knows someone who suffers from psoriatic arthritis knows it is a lifelong battle, fought day by day.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that presents itself in patchy rashes on the skin. The most common type, plaque psoriasis, can look different in different people. Generally, skin reddens and dries forming cracks that may bleed. Intense itchiness, burning, and pain are also common. Other types of psoriasis include: nail psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, and erythrodermic psoriasis.

It's best to see a doctor if the rash is severe or spreads over the body, causing pain, or doesn't improve.

A family history of psoriasis is the main factor in contracting the disease. Smoking is another one. People with psoriasis are at higher risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and other autoimmune conditions such as Crohn's, IBS, and sclerosis.

Currently, there is no cure for psoriasis, although there are three types of treatments to control it. There are creams and ointments, phototherapy, and oral or injected medications. This includes biologic medications which are extracted from biologic sources.

Many sufferers claim a breakout may be triggered by particular foods, alcohol consumption, smoking or stress.

Depending on the severity, a doctor may prescribe a variety of treatments.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa, a Common Skin Condition

September 22, 2022

Hidradenitis suppurativa is more common than you may think.

Although it may be embarrassing, Hidradenitis suppurativa is a common skin condition. It isn’t precisely clear what causes it, but obesity plays a role.

Hidradenitis suppurativa affects the sweat glands, especially those in the folds of skin in the armpits,

What is Hidradenitis suppurativa

It is a condition that affects the sweat glands, particularly those located in the skin folds in the armpits, under the breasts, and in the groin and buttocks area. It is more likely to occur or be more severe in individuals with excess skin folds.

Eczema ( Atopic dermatitis) is a common condition in young children, but can occur at any age. It causes the skin to become dry, itchy and inflamed.

A mild case of eczema may progress into a severe case if untreated. Symptoms may include oozing and crusting, which may lead to infected skin.

Common triggers include food allergies, dry skin, contact with an irritant, heat, dust mites or pet dander, and soap or chemicals.

On brown or black-skinned people, eczema can present as small, raised bumps.

Creams, OTC topical medications, humidifiers and prescription medications such as immunosuppressants are common treatments for eczema.

Vaping and Health

September 8, 2022

Current headline news reveals a major e-cigarette manufacturer, Juul, must pay a multimillion-dollar fine.

Seen as safer than regular tobacco cigarettes and a means to stop smoking, electronic cigarettes have skyrocketed in popularity. Although they don’t deliver the myriad of harmful chemicals released by burning tobacco, it is increasingly evident that electronic cigarettes hold their own dangers.

Since their introduction in 2006 in Europe and the United States, experts have argued over their value in reducing lung cancer from smoking traditional cigarettes.

GALLERY OF LICENSABLE VAPING IMAGES

Many of the devices offer fruit and candy flavors to entice high school and middle school students to begin vaping. Since it is highly addictive, you have lifelong customers starting at a young age and it is not uncommon for them to combine vaping with traditional smoking.

Nicotine itself is a harmful chemical, raising blood pressure and adrenaline levels, thereby increasing the likelihood of heart attacks.

E-cigarettes also deliver other harmful and carcinogenic chemicals and poisons to the body. These include diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical used in antifreeze, acrolein, a weed killer, and formaldehyde. A food additive, Diacetyl, used to enhance fruit and candy flavors, also damages the small airways in the lungs.

Science Source stock images and video provides photos, body scans, and motion related to these topics.

Includes photos, medical scans, and medical illustrations: lung cancer, vaping damage to lungs, e-cigarettes, cigarettes, CT scans, x-rays, gross anatomy.

Polio Stock Medical Photos: History and Prevention

August 22, 2022

Polio or poliomyelitis., which is caused by the poliovirus, is recently in the news again. After decades of virtual eradication, doctors are concerned about rising cases.  The culprit appears to be the unvaccinated.

In July 2022, a young man was diagnosed with polio. He is from Rockland County, NY, where it is not uncommon for parents not to vaccinate their children against childhood diseases.  Polio is very contagious.

Based on this discovery, officials have tested the wastewater in several nearby communities - including New York City - and found the poliovirus.

GALLERY OF POLIO STOCK IMAGES

The polio vaccine is part of the regimen of vaccines given to children in the United States. Except in very rare and unusual circumstances, the vaccine gives the person immunity for life.   Polio, which can cause permanent or temporary paralysis, has no cure, so prevention is indeed the best medicine.  Polio may lead to death if the lungs’ diaphragm becomes paralyzed.

Those affected may never fully recover, and children may go on to have wasted limbs, usually the legs.

Humans have contracted the disease for thousands of years. There are depictions of its victims in ancient art. The poliovirus was first discovered by immunologist Karl Landsteiner in 1909.  In the 20th century, polio became one of the childhood diseases that most concerned parents as it became more prevalent.   Luckily, the polio vaccine was introduced in the 1950s, and the disease’s incidence rapidly declined.  One of the first successful vaccines was developed by an American virologist, Jonas Salk.

Experts had hoped humanity would eradicate polio, as we have done with smallpox, but pockets of infection remain, mainly in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Officials will continue to work towards full eradication in the future. Much depends on global vaccination rates.

Science Source Images has a full collection of polio stock photos and the poliovirus.  We feature SEMs, TEMS, and LMs, as well as body scans (CT, MRI, x-rays) of most common diseases and conditions. Rights Managed (RM),  Royalty-Free (RF), and subscriptions are available.

The Beauty of Jose Luis Calvo's Medical Microscopy

July 12, 2022

What may look like a beautiful flower painting or an abstract landscape to the untrained eye is actually the remarkable microscopy of Jose Luis Calvo.

Butterfly wings are in fact, a light micrograph of the Spinal Cord. What resembles a tree at sunset is a Purkinje Neuron, and green mountains are melanin of the human skin.

Calvo's Medical Light Microscopy on Science Source Stock Images

Dr. Calvo's expansive microscopy subjects include human blood, liver tissue, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, kidneys, human heart, vein walls, arteries, thyroid gland, pineal gland, pancreas, ovaries, pituitary gland, cerebellar cortex, and many more. All of these can be found on our website SCIENCESOURCE.COM. Use the link above!

Like another student from Madrid University, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Calvo's work is not only medically valuable but artistically rendered.

Jose Luis Calvo is a respected expert in his field but also the Chair of Histology (currently of Cellular Biology) at the University of Madrid.

As a professor of Cytology, Histology, Embryology, Microscopic Organography, and Genetics for over 35 years, Jose has instructed several thousand students.

And he has published scientific papers in numerous periodicals. Calvo has been a founding member of the Spanish Society of Histology, the European Pineal Study Group, and the European Neuroscience Society.
